The Tampa Bay Rays opened their 2026 Grapefruit League schedule with a convincing 4-0 shutout of the Boston Red Sox at Charlotte Sports Park on Sunday, powered by a dominant pitching performance that has the fan base buzzing about October possibilities.
Starter Jalen Reyes, the club’s top offseason acquisition, set the tone with three perfect innings, striking out four on a mix of fastballs touching 98 mph and a devastating slider that had Red Sox hitters waving at air.
“My slider felt really good today,” Reyes said after the game. “The work I did this offseason with the pitching lab, getting that spin rate up — you could see it paying off out there.”
Bullpen Depth on Display
Reliever Marcus Chen followed with two scoreless frames, and left-hander Davi Oliveira — a Rule 5 pick who has turned heads all spring — struck out the side in the sixth. The trio combined to allow zero hits through six innings before the back-end bullpen arms took over.
Manager Kevin Cash expressed satisfaction with the early returns. “It’s one game. It’s March. I get that. But the stuff we saw today from Reyes, Chen, and Oliveira — that’s real. You can’t fake 98 with movement.”
Offensive Highlights
At the plate, shortstop Wander Franco went 2-for-3 with a double off the left-center field wall, looking healthy after last season’s wrist injury limited him to 95 games. Designated hitter Josh Lowe drove in two runs with a sharp single through the right side in the fourth inning.
The Rays continue Grapefruit League play Tuesday against the Yankees. Reyes is expected to throw three to four innings in his next start on Saturday.
